ISLAMIC, Mamluks. al-Zahir Sayf al-Din Jaqmaq, AH 842-857 / AD 1438-1453. Ashrafi (Gold, 16 mm, 3.40 g, 2 h), al-Qahira (Cairo), date off flan. Between three segmented lines, ‘[arsalahū / lā] ilāha illā [Allāh] / Muḥammad rasūl Al[lāh / bi al-hudā]’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. He [i.e., Allah] sent him with guidance’ in Arabic). Rev. Between three segmented lines, ‘bi al-Qāhi[ra] / al-sulṭān al-malik al-ẓā[hir] / Abū Saʿīd Jaqmaq … / …’ (‘In al-Qahira. The Sultan and King al-Zahir Abu Saʿid Jaqmaq …’ in Arabic). Album 1006. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.
